다양한 한약을 실용적으로 저장하고 관리하기 위해 고안된 장을 약장이라고 한다. 약 이름은 두 글자로 축약되는데, 이는 어떤 약초의 어느 부위인지를 의미한다.
효과적인 관리를 위해 긴 용처럼 생긴 작은 서랍이 고안되었다. 이 오동나무 약장은 역시 오동나무로 만들어진 문갑을 갖추고 있다. 위층은 68개의 서랍으로 구성되어 있고, 아래층은 서류 보관함처럼 생겼다. 이 약장은 132종의 한약을 담을 수 있는데, 조선 시대에 널리 쓰인 것들로 구성되어 있다. 가장 밑의 4칸을 제외한 64개의 서랍은 두 종류의 약 이름인데, 이는 각각 두 종류의 약재로 나뉜다. 아래쪽 4칸이 위쪽 서랍들보다 큰 것은 자주 사용되는 많은 양의 약초를 넣기 위해서는 부피가 커야 했기 때문이다. 약장의 약 이름은 서랍마다 앞에 손글씨로 쓰여 있는데, 각도를 맞춘 후 고훈(흰색 안료. 모래사장의 조개나 굴 껍데기를 갈아 만든다)을 칠하여 표시한다. 각 서랍에는 서랍을 쉽게 여닫을 수 있도록 동그란 고리 모양의 쇠가 손잡이로 달려 있다.
