짙은 코발트색 청화안료로 스무살의 청년 장생(張生)과 열아홉 살의 처녀 앵앵(鶯鶯)이 사랑의 밀애를 나눈 이야기를 담은 소설책인 『서상기(西廂記)』의 내용을 표현한 청화백자이다. 항아리 목 둘레에는 부드러운 곡선으로 파도 무늬를 표현하였으며 어깨에는 부귀영화를 상징하는 모란이 기면을 따라 반복적으로 그려져 있고, 풍만한 몸통에는 장생과 앵앵이 정자를 사이에 두고 버드나무, 파초 등과 함께 서 있는 모습으로 그려져 있다. 버드나무는 불교에서 자비를 상징하며, 파초는 불에 타도 싹을 틔운 까닭에 기사회생을 상징한다.

The blue-and-white porcelain jar is painted with a scene from the novel "Romance of the Western Chamber (西廂記)," depicting 20-year-old Zhangsheng and a 19-year-old Yingying falling in love and talking secretly to each other, in a dark cobalt-blue pigment. The mouth is encircled by smooth waves, and the shoulder is collared with a peony band. The glamorous body is painted with Zhangsheng and Yingying standing with willow and plantains between them. The willow symbolizes mercy in Buddhism, and the plantain is the symbol of revival, for it germinates even when fired.
